DEFLIVE 005: 1st Round Trios Tourney Action Continues

Posted by Dave Felcher on 24 Aug 2016

Live Event 005 (1st Round Trios Endurance Tourney Matches)
National Guard Armory - 700 Seats (Sold Out)
Referees: Hector Navarro and Carla Ferrari
Host / Ring-Announcer: Angus Skaaland

LIVE NOTES:
The show kicked off immediately with the Brutal Attack Force stomping down to the ring pissed about something. The snagged the microphone away from Skaaland before he could even say anything. Literally for the next ten minutes the crowd was rolling in the isles as Petey Garrett and Solomon Grendel gave their angry sob story about their third man (and former old school trios partner from years back) Curtis Penn completely no-showed the event. We were laughing thanks to Skaaland giving them just the hardest time about the whole ordeal.

After finally getting down to business, Skaaland asked them if they wanted a replacement… Petey Garrett was so goddamn mad and embarrassed at that point, he just screams at Angus (without consulting the only partner left to him, mind you) that “they’re fine just the two of them”... so Skaaland shrugged and called for the bell right there!

First Round Match
BRUTAL ATTACK FORCE + Curtis Penn vs. The Midcard Experiment
Ref: Carla Ferrari
MATCH REPORT:
Fishman Jr, The Birdman and the masked CAGE! all made their entrance together. You’ve never lived until you’ve sung along to the lyrics of "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" by Belinda Carlisle with a bunch of rowdy ass pro wrestling fans, lemme tell you what. The Good Time Boys and their weird Nicolas Cage masked friend… well, CAGE! were having a ton of fun with their entrance until Garrett and Grendel LAUNCHED themselves from the ring, bowling over all three members of the Midcard Experiment. In an attempt to “even the odds” the BAF boys quickly lept on poor CAGE! like a couple of wild dogs whilst Walter and Fish recovered, just ripping and tearing and shit-kicking the mysterious masked man to near death before depositing their two other opponents into the ring.

Given the evened odds, Garrett and Grendel held their own, staying in a pretty dominant position. Even when CAGE! managed himself back to a standing position, joining his compatriots BAF seemed to stay in it. Two on three however is two on three. And despite their general lunacy, The Midcard Experiment is one hell of a trios combination. The three pronged assault of Fishman’s rock solid lucha knowhow, Walter’s reckless arial abandon and CAGE!’s… well, and CAGE!... worked like gangbusters, TME pulling out ahead. As soon as they started losing the thread, the BAF team started end fighting...  Grendel obviously not happy with Garrett’s hasty decision to NOT pick a new third man. It was CAGE! of all people who managed to take advantage of BAF’s arguing, popping off the incredible top rope double foot stomp he calls “Bangkok Dangerous” to just straight up compress Petey Garrett’s ribcage for the biggest pinfall victory of his strange, short career.
WINNERS: THE MIDCARD EXPERIMENT (Hijo del Fishman Deluxe, Walter Levy and CAGE!)

LIVE NOTES:
Skaaland tried to talk, but got interrupted again (such easy heat at one of these shows)... this time by BRONSON BOX. Boos, cheers... the only thing the spastic response from the Faithful had in common was the fact it was LOUD. I’ve never seen Angus move so fast, just dropping the mic and bailing not just to ringside but over the barrier, taking a seat in the second row behind a particularly retund fan. Box went on to say he was in a particularly bad mood after DEFtv and wanted to, and I quote “work some shite out” with an open challenge in tonight's main event. It looked like Box was going to drop the mic and head off, presumably to issue the challenge later… but he was cut off by the sound of "Smiling And Dyin" by the band Green River. From behind the curtain walked an unassuming young man clad in a pair of ratty jean shorts and a pair of big black combat boots.

Thanks to a smattering of appearances thus far on DEFIANCE television and due in-part to his work years ago in IWF, young Scott Douglas came out to impressed cheers from the Faithful. Douglas and Boxer trade a few bards, but in the end… "Seattle's Favorite Son" accepts the open challenge from The Wargod. ” … I can’t think of a better way to make my mark here in DEF than to BEAT its favorite son, right there in that ring… “ Really good segment from these two guys, Douglas looked strong as hell trading barbs with Box, who’s one of the best shit-talkers in the business.

First Round Match
No Justice, No Peace vs. The Dunson Clan
Ref: Hector Navarro
MATCH REPORT:
Rick Ross ushered in the next first round tournament match as former “BRAZEN Five” denotee Felton Bigsby lead his crew down to the ring. The Neighborhoodlum was the first out, and honestly? Didn’t shut his goddamn mouth the entire match. I’ve never sat and watched a more irritating professional wrestler. Guess you have to be “too much” when your usual tag partners are the enormous Bigsby and the even enormous-er 450 plus pound Roosevelt Owens. Last man through the curtain, staying eerily quiet is big Rosey’s uncle and the group’s manager Brother Lucius, who just stood there at ringside… his bespectacled eyes never left the action in the ring. Not even when Paul Dunson marched out with his two sons Richie (the “tough” one) and Todd (the “sensitive” one) in tow.

Big Roosevelt started for his team against older brother Richie who failed with several strong armed attempts to chop the nearly 500 pounder down to absolutely no avail. Richie then gave little brother Todd a go at the giant. Thinking himself as tough as his brother and as experienced as his father, Todd bowed right up to the giant man only to get his chest caved in with some brutal open palm shots that left Todd’s chest Crayola red. Finally the veteran papa Dunson got the tag and was on the big man like a house of fire. Rosey might be enormous, but he’s green as grass. It wasn’t long before Paul had him off his feet and struggling in the most basic of wrestling holds. Rosey reached out and tagged in the first hand he could reach, that hand sadly being attached to Neighborhoodlum who further makes NJ,NP look low rent just getting dragged and beaten from pillar to post with all three Dunson’s getting their licks in.

The whole complexion of the match changed, however, when the Hoodlum managed the hot tag to “Houston Strong” Felton Bigsby. Nothing the Dunson’s could string together seemed to affect Bigsby. I’ve never seen strenght like Bigsby’s outside of… well, his former trainer and the open challenger of tonight's main event, DEF’s own Bronson Box.

The end was academic after Felton manhandled Todd Dunson with the running powerslam into the turnbuckle he calls the East Texas Stampede for the clean pinfall victory.
WINNERS: NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE

First Round Match
Strong-Style Stranglers vs. The Barrio Boys w/ Mr. Salazar
Ref: Carla Ferrari
MATCH REPORT:
The low point of the night, in my humble opinion. As The Barrio Boys made their positivity filled entrance alongside their life coach and former high school principal Mr. Gustavo Salazar… the three maniacs that make up the Strong-Style Stranglers assaulted all four men from behind with chairs. The high flyer Ridgway, the massive Brody, and the group's leader and former WfWA World Tag Team champion Jacob Hart all three brutally assault their opponents before the bell… especially their manager Mr. Salazar who eventually had to be carted away to a waiting ambulance by medics. To the credit of the three Barrio Boys, they held their ground and put up a hell of a fight, rallied themselves and DEMANDED the referee start the match. The brutal pre-bell beating left the whole match incredible lop sided, as only the Boys resident high flyer Corey Nunez was left without any serious injuries and was made quick work of by the Stranglers. In the end it was the sadistic Jacob Hart who casually dropped down and took the pinfall “victory” for his team.
WINNERS: THE STRONG-STYLE STRANGLERS

First Round Match
The Louisiana Bulldogs + Levi Cole vs. The Guns of Brixton
Ref: Hector Navarro
MATCH REPORT:
The classic British grappler “Nasty” Nigel King, the scrappy brawler Harry Rose, and the granite-like “West Midlands Mauler” big Rob Collins might have been relatively new and unknown to the crowd when they made their entrance… lemme tell you. By the time they got down the ramp and in the ring they made it CLEAR as day how they felt about the “disgusting ragamuffins” in attendance and how they deserve better than to be cloistered away on cocked up bullshit shows like this“... booo.

The Guns pre-match promo helped to fuel a raucous reaction to the joint entrance of local boys The Louisiana Bulldogs and current DEF*MAX competitor Levi Cole. Who by the way is a goddamn soldier for not dropping out of the trios tourney due to DEF*MAX… (fuck you Curtis Penn)... but I digress. This was easily the longest match of the night and in my opinion, the best. Cole and the Brandt brothers singled out and effectively isolated Harry Rose and just WORKED him over with a crisp assault filled with quick tags that kept the pressure directly on Rose and his Guns tag team partners. Thanks probably to the inexperience of the brothers Brandt, Rose manages a tag to the leader of The Guns… “Nasty” Nigel King.

The last half of the match is a mirror image of the first half, with The Guns of Brixton cutting off the ring and just BRUTALIZING young Denver Brandt. As King went about wrenching Denver’s arms out of their sockets and trying him into knots, Rose didn’t stop antagonizing poor Levi Cole out on the apron who looked like he was about to pop he wanted in the ring so badly. Nigel took a breather to allow big Rob Collins to tenderize Denver a bit before pretty quickly tagging back in and returning to work. The end came when King effortlessly nipped Denver’s legs and clipped on a nerve frying Heel Hook for the submission victory.
WINNERS: THE GUNS OF BRIXTON

LIVE NOTES:
Skaaland finally got to talk, letting everyone know that in addition to the semi’s and finals of the Endurance Tournament, the upcoming BRAZEN iPPV will include a huge 15 man battle royal! Why? What is it for? “Don’t worry about all that nonsense, just show up and enjoy ya’ GORRAM nerds“. ... to obviously quote Angus himself.

MAIN EVENT: Box's Open Challenge
Bronson Box vs. Scott Douglas
Ref: Carla Ferrari
MATCH REPORT:
“Sub Pop Scott” was the first out to a rousing ovation from the crowd… an ovation that definitely had a bit of an impressed “well, good luck buddy” sort of tone to it in my humble opinion. But Douglas was unfazed, he just marched to the ring and started preparing for EASILY the biggest match of his restarted career. "Seattle's Favorite Son" came out on fire, taking it to the DEF legend right away. As technically proficient as Douglas is known to be, he obviously knew he couldn't match up against the grappling gifts of the DEFIANCE Ace, instead diving down into his jam packed bag of lucha libre inspired tricks to keep Boxer off his game early on.

It’s not long however that Bronson leans into the rookie with his usual… pardon the pun, but onslaught of driving forearms and sharp elbows down across his head and neck area. All that followed up with a huuuuge one-armed delayed vertical suplex that despite being “the heel” popped the crowd as hard as they had been all night. Douglas showed just immeasurable resilience though as he managed to KICK OUT of the subsequent pinfall right at two and a half, frustrating Boxer to no end.

Utilizing his unique combo of quickness and technical proficiency Scott managed to get Boxer off his feet and down to the mat with a drop toe hold. A lightning fast baseball slide to the side of the head on the mat, a few well timed dropkicks to the skull as Box was finding his base… Douglas already had the crowd on their FEET by the time he cracked off the crowd jolting release German Suplex that garnered him a cloooooose as close gets two count over the former two time FIST of DEFIANCE. With The Wargod at his mercy, Douglas decided to air towards showmanship and scale the nearest turnbuckle. The moonsault was absolutely breathtaking, on that alone Douglas won over the crowd… but unfortunately for Sub Pop Scott Boxer was less impressed. Douglas’ chest met nothing but empty space and canvas when he connected. Boxer rolled out of the way and up to his feet so quickly it was almost inhuman. Box rolled back through and immediately locked in the Boston Massacre… and even after a valiant effort locked in the vice-like submission hold… Douglas is forced to tap, giving up the submission victory to The Original DEFIANT.

Boxer didn’t even wait for Skaaland to make any sort of announcement about the win, he just dropped Scott and rolled from the ring, matched up the ramp and as quickly as The Wargod arrived… he left. Eerily similar to his win at DEFCON over Eugene.
WINNER: BRONSON BOX

LIVE NOTES:
As Angus and producer Mike Sloan helped Douglas to his feet and handed him an ice pack for his no doubt aching back the Seattle native got a STANDING OVATION from the Faithful after a well fought match against a DEF*MAX 2016 competitor not to mention one of DEFIANCE’s absolute best. As Scott Douglas made his way around ringside slapping hands and taking pictures, the crowd was buzzing about the future of this young man. No doubt was left in anyone’s mind that he does indeed belong on DEF’s main roster. Killer performance from Douglas, killer two nights of wrestling. Can’t wait for the iPPV!

TALKING DEF

"We have, after all, returned to the "great" city of New Orleans. A place most famous for its tendency to get drunk and nude. A city with a whooping 71% graduation rate in its local school system - which seems high until you realize that New Orleans routinely graduates students who are unable to read as evidenced by the quality of the signs here tonight. But why would you care? You don't need to read to flash your breasts for beads though, do you? And the most egregious offense of all: New Orleans birthed this ignorant, aggressively stupid, childish excuse for a company. Yes, children, it is fitting - DEFIANCE was born from a decrepit landfill full of ignorant swamp-folk, and for its 200th episode it returns to the black hole of civilization from whence it came."
