Conversation with Dusty Griffith

Posted by Lance Warner on 20 May 2014

I sat down with Dusty Griffith to discuss not only himself, but DEFIANCE as well, as we make our long awaited return to American soil.

* On his battle with Edward White:
"Ol' Ed put up a hell of a fight, brother. It was good, real good, actually." Griffith grinned with an air of satisfaction. "That said, I don't have any illusions that it's over."

* On Eugene Dewey's performance:
"Man, that kid is something else, isn't he?" I nodded my agreement. "To think of where he was only a year ago compared to now, it's night and day if you ask me." Seeing an opening, I asked. "He went from being some other kids big buddy to the FIST of DEFIANCE... He went from taking beatings for Sawyer to standing up for himself against a lunatic like Boxer and a goddamn legend like Dan Ryan... I'd say the kid has become a man now."

* On the State of the Blood Diamonds:
"Listen... Toronto wasn't a good night for them." He snorts and thumbs his nose before continuing. "Ol' Euge' and I... and Kai Scott for that matter... Gave them boys the worst night of their existence as a group." The grin fades as reality sets in. "That don't mean I think it's over, like I said, I haven't got an illusions about that... Right now it's a waiting game to see what they'll be up to."

* Speaking of Kai Scott... What about the Champion?:
"What about him?" I ask about the potential of a rematch in the future. "It's not up to me, brother. You might want to ask him... or the boss, whoever that is from one week to the next." I press the issue, namely that of all the possible contenders, he's the only one to come out of Toronto with a win. "Of course I want another crack at it." He says gruffly, a little annoyed. "I've been watching what Scott's been up to since he and I had our dance in Japan... And I gotta say, I'm kind of jealous of Heidi and Boxer." Oh? "I'm just saying is all..." I leave it there and move along.

* On rumors of DEFIANCE's new homebase in New Orleans:
"I'm like everyone else... Waiting to see what's what about that... Guess we'll find out after we finish our whip around the homeland."

* On other rumors, namely an offer from the "new" WWA:
"Last I heard that got shotdown pretty hard... No big deal to me though, I'm not looking to go back to Oh Seven, Oh Eight... One ring is all I need anymore."

* The State of DEFIANCE as he sees it:
"I'm not too sharp on where DEFIANCE was before I came back... I know it had it's ups and downs, starts and stops, what have you... We've lost some good hands, some deadweight too, and we've picked up some good... and bad ones... along the way. I'd say DEFIANCE is rolling strong, all we need to do is keep it on the road."
